Danish designer Kurt Østervig (1912-1986) originally trained at Odense Steel Shipyard as a naval engineer. However, his career took a turn when he was commissioned to work by the Design Studio of E. Knudsen, one of the leading furniture manufacturers of the 1930s and 1940s.
He opened his own studio in 1947 and became a freelance interior designer, working with most of the Scandinavian furniture companies of the time.
In addition to residential furniture, he was also involved in providing specialised design solutions for ships, hotels and cinemas. Ostervig is also known for his designs, some of which are so rich in detail that they look like photographs.
In 1960, one of Ostervig’s design pieces was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
