Kaare Klint’s “Safari Chair” has been a pearl of his design since his birth in 1933.
Thanks to its simple functionality’, it has become a design classic in the world.
Kaare Klint found the inspiration for the “Safari Chair” in the landscapes of Africa.
He designed this chair in 1933, inspired by the chair of a British officer he had seen in a travel guide to Africa.
He was particularly impressed by a photograph in the book in which the author and his wife were sitting on similar chairs at the entrance to their tent in the savannah.
Kaare Klint’s goal was to create a lightweight, portable armchair.
The chair can be easily assembled and disassembled without tools, making it ideal for use in the field.
This chair is also described as the world’s first “do-it-yourself” piece of furniture, and is the result of a deep knowledge of materials and ergonomic requirements of the human body.
Kaare Klint is known for its classic furniture.
The first “Safari” models were sold to K. Klint’s colleagues, such as Arne Jacobsen, who saw possibilities in their simple and functional style.
It was Arne Jacobsen who suggested adding a cushion to the seat.
Initially the “Safari chair” was made of Cuban mahogany.
However, later K. Klint decided that ash was more suited to his visual style because of its light colour and strength.
Currently the chair is made of oiled ash, in light or dark versions, using wood from the Danish forests.
